For me the eyes are everything about a person or other mammalian creature. Eye behavior transmits very subtle clues about the movement of the creature’s mind. I say creature’s mind, because you can stare in the eyes of a dog or cat, as well as some humans. Rats don’t do stares with humans as a general rule…..but staring does permit interaction of the movement of minds as they regard each other.

This for me is the definition of sentience: the ability to regard the mind of another.
