I was just told by a scientist of great repute that the the following may be true of female mammals: hippocampal axons and dendrites grow during the high estrogen phase of their estrus cycle. The axons and dendrites retreat during the low estrogen part of their estrous cycle. Cytoskeletal modifications to these structures appears to be the mechanism of this wonder. This was first discovered in female rats, but it may generalize to all female mammals. Male rats, and possibly all male mammals don’t experience this.
